Does Gel Curing Your Press-Ons Work?
The biggest question on everyone’s mind is a simple one: Does this viral TikTok trend actually work?
The jury, it appears, is still outeven amongst the pros.
According to Smith, gel-curing press-on nails can extend their lifecycle by a few weeks.
Elle, however, disagrees.
“Press-on nails are never used with gel to apply,” she explains.
“Gel X nailsand gel form nails arethey look like press ons but they arent press ons.
Dont confuse them as they are complete different productsone is plastic and one is gel.
“Gel-cured press-on nails can last up to three weeks,” Smith says.
There are also some fairly significant safety concerns with gel-cured press-on nails.
You could experience swelling, pain, inflammation, and separation with this contact allergy.
Dr. Stern explains that the UV light must penetrate the press-on to cure the gel.
When the gel is fully cured, this is no longer a risk.
Nail Damage
When press-on nails are gel cured, you could’t just pop them off.
Instead, you’ll need to soak your press-ons in pure acetone.
Most nail damage from enhancements takes place during theremoval process, Dr. Stern tells us.
“Over time, UV radiation can cause damage to the skin,” Smith says.
“Like skin wrinkling, age spots, and skin cancer with prolonged use.”
She points out that gel-curing press-on nails with LED light is safer than UV light.
Dr. Stern says there’s a need for additional research on the possible risks of gel manicures.
But others can safely be applied at home.
