For lack of a less ubiquitous phrase, they make it work.

Because the origin of a look is just as important as the look itself.

The backstory deserves its hard-earned glory.

Below, join us in taking a peek behind the curtain.

We play around a lot with wigs and wanted to use one to complement the glass-skin makeup Lilly applied.

it’s possible for you to lose a lot of dimension when you work on dark hair.

Look two was Pop Art all the wayRoy Lichtensteino-rama!

The orange wig was such a fab color choice for Emmas skin and coloring.

I wanted to give it a frizzy-but-styled look, a la Grace Coddington.

A true fashion Icon!

The best product for this is Oribes Dry Texturizing Spray, which gives so much grip and body.

The third look offered a pins still in effect but without the pins.

We were thinking of those early 90s Vivienne Westwood catwalk shows with Sara Stockbridge.

I used Rehabs really nourishing Essential Hair Spray to cast the curls.

On working with Emma…Working with Emma is a joy.

Its been a few years now, and she is always up for something creative.

She really has that Yes, and… improv energy that makes collaborating a dream.

Shes super engaged in the chair.

We talk for hours.

Shes not one to be sitting there on her phone while we all work around her.

We talk and dream up ideas together shes a star!

I learned who I was there and discovered the world of creativity.

Its the best city on Earth for that.

I had a very unorthodox start in hairdressing.

I got into beauty by accident!

I was on track to become a photographer but needed a side gig while that got going.

I didnt want to be anywhere but elbow deep in a bag of hair extensions and wigs.

That was my aha moment!

On his career highlights…Every time I step into studio 8H forSNL, its a huge highlight!

Ive done it three times now, [and] may there be many, many more!

I cried for hours.

Each day we perform little magic tricks, and I love it.

It never gets old!

But that fearlessness, knowing you could create, is brilliant.

The job changed for me in that instant.

In terms of icons, I have so many.

Barbarella was a really big one for me as I learned the craft.

We were inspired by Pat McGraths vision for the 2023 Maison Margiela runway.

“The hero product for the second look wasDanessa Myricks Colorfix Mattes in Primary Red.

We wanted this look to feel like Pop Art.

The matte texture of the paint made each dot striking against her fresh, bare skin.

The same deep maroon shade on the lips ties everything together, adding a bold, velvety touch.

The result is romantic, cinematic, and a little mysterious.

On working with Emma…Emma is truly one of a kind.

Shes absolutely hilarious and one of the most unique and interesting people Ive ever met.

We always have so much fun working together.

It wasnt until I discovered makeup artistry that I truly found my calling.

My first experience with makeup artistry as a career started when I was modeling in South Africa.

I remember being fascinated by how the makeup artist could transform my face.

It felt like magic!

At the time, I never really saw it as a viable career for myself.

But after having my son at 25, everything shifted.

On her career highlights…There have been so many incredible highlights in my career.

My first Grammys (with Olivia Rodrigo) was unforgettable.

My first Met Gala, also with Olivia, was another surreal moment.

Landing my firstVoguecover (I have three now!)

was a major milestone.

Beauty has completely shaped my life and given me a career that Im truly passionate about.

Seeing how makeup can transform not just a look but also how someone feels about themselves is so rewarding.

Its given me confidence, independence, and a sense of purpose.

Theres nothing more fulfilling than making someone feel beautiful in their own skin!

On her mentors and icons…So many legendary artists have shaped my approach to makeup.

Kevyn Aucoins ability to redefine beauty and transform faces has always inspired me.

His book,Face Forward, Ive had forever.

Pat McGraths creativity and influence on runway beauty is unmatched.

And Charlotte Tilburys signature glowing glam is something Ive always admired.
