Hair texture can be a fickle friend.

Changes in our hair, especially when they seem to be for the worse, can be unsettling.

Fortunately, many of the various causes of hair texture changes are completely normal.

We’ve enlisted the knowledge and expertise of industry specialists to provide insights and solutions.

That said, managing stress can play a vital role in maintaining healthy locks.

Scalp Conditions

“Great hair comes from a greater scalp,” says Berkovitz.

Unfortunately, age can sometimes complicate matters.

“With age, the skin produces less sebum or oil.

“Less oil production can make hair feel dry or coarse.

Another age-related factor to keep in mind.

“Altered collagen production may affect scalp skin and the growth of hair follicles.”

The same goes for essential fatty acids, especially omega-3s.

If you’re vegan, opt for Brussels sprouts, chia seeds, and walnuts.

“Finish with a pH spray or anti-pollution drops,” Berkovitz suggests.

Here’s why: Tap water generally has a pH balance of 7.9.

Your hair’s pH is 5.5.

That difference in pH explains why your hair feels smooth in the shower but tangles once you’re out.

With those ‘shingles’ flaring open, your hair feels rougher and tangles easily.

Seasonal Cycles

Seasonal weather changes or traveling from drastically different climates can impact your hair’s texture.

Prolonged sun exposure can produce similar results.

Say you’re shampooing your hair every three days or so.

Over that time, your hair collects buildup from styling products, dead cells, and pollution.

Together, they leave your hair looking dull and take away its silky feel.

“Start with a weekly reset,” Berkovitz recommends.

He continues, “Leave the oil on your hair for at least 20 minutes.

But be sure and consult with your doctor before you go making changes on your own.

Along with thinning, you’ll probably also notice dryness and brittleness.
